Live Free, Drive Fast: a New Hampshire journalist
Publishes Book About NHIS
Concord, N.H. — What has seven miles of water pipes, over 300 phone
lines and two tunnels that are 20 feet in diameter and 130 feet
in length running underneath? Perhaps this will help, “Gentlemen…
start your engines.” The New Hampshire International Speedway (NHIS)
is the largest sporting facility, in terms of seating, in New England.
It was also home to the first New England sporting event to attract
more than 100,000 attendees (July 9, 2000, the thatlook.com 300).
As if this weren’t impressive enough, NHIS now boasts a book, a
biography if you will, written by five-time award-winning New Hampshire
Sportswriter of the Year, Allen Lessels.
Lessels thought of the idea for the book at the NASCAR race in
July of 2005. With a little inspiration from author Janet Evanovich
and driver Tony Stewart, Lessels’ Live Free, Drive Fast (Plaidswede
Publishing, July 2006) became a reality.
With a foreword by driver Ricky Craven and a picture of Tony Stewart
on the cover, the book may seem to scream “NASCAR” when in reality
it focuses more on the notion, execution and realization of the
lifelong dream of NHIS owners Bob and Gary Bahre.
About the author:
Lessels began his journalism career as an editor in the Concord
Monitor’s news department after graduating from the University of
New Hampshire. His career has taken him to papers throughout New
England, including the Boston Globe where he wrote for the Sports
Section and the New Hampshire Weekly section. He currently writes
for the Union Leader as part of the team that covers NASCAR and
spends a good portion of his time covering University of New Hampshire
sports.
Lessels’ book is published by Plaidswede Publishing based in Concord,
New Hampshire. Plaidswede is a small publishing house that prints
books and periodicals about New Hampshire and New England.
Please note that NHIS will host the New England 300 July 13 – 16
and the Sylvania 300 September 14 – 17.
