Mumbai, Apr 13 In a bid to tap the Indian digital printing market, that is expected to grow to $177.3 million by 2012, Xerox is all set to bring its “laser colour continuous feed technology” in India . The $17 billion technology and service company will launch this technology simultaneously in India and Drupa 2008, the world print media trade show, in Germany in October this year.

The technology will enable high definition work such as printing of 1,300 pages per minute. Currently, in India such high speed printing technology is available only for black and white printing but the launch of this technology will enable colour printing too. Vipin Tuteja, executive director, Xerox Production Systems, Xerox India, said, “The high speed equipment and technology will enable much more economical colour printing. This is basically targeted towards transformational printing which is used in various formats. For example, in mobile bills, a number of advertisements could be placed, depending on the space and a single operator might have millions of subscribers who get their bills regularly.”

Xerox already has a print market share of 70% of the telecom bills in India and 90% of statement and cheque book printing for private sector banks. There are about three million people employed in the digital printing industry and with the industry expected to grow about 12% CAGR, the employment is expected to grow by 7-8% CAGR.

With an outlook to have trained manpower in the industry, Xerox has helped the Karnataka State Printing Association set up the Xerox KSPA training centre in Bangalore . Tuteja adds, “Since the industry is basically driven by family businesses, there is a lack of awareness. We wanted to develop the talent by training people so that they can be creative with data, customisation and colours.”
